Dutton Dynasty: '1944' Prequel Still Cooking at Paramount

3w ago

The sprawling saga of the Dutton family ranch is far from over. After a lengthy stretch of public silence that fueled speculation, the highly anticipated "Yellowstone" prequel series, "1944," has been confirmed to be in active development at Paramount and Paramount+.

This news comes as a welcome update for fans eager to see the next historical chapter unfold. Television journalist Matt Webb Mitovich addressed the project's status in his "Matt's Inside Line" newsletter, stating he received assurances that the prequel is indeed still moving forward. While specific casting details or a detailed plot have yet to be revealed, the series has reportedly been greenlit for one season and is being eyed for a late 2026 debut. This marks the clearest confirmation of "1944's" progress since its initial announcement in February 2023.

"1944" is designed to chronologically follow the events of the hit prequel "1923," picking up approximately two decades later. Its purpose within the expansive "Yellowstone" universe is to bridge the significant historical gap between the early 20th-century setting of "1923" and the modern-day narrative of the original "Yellowstone" series, which concluded its six-season run in 2024.

The "Yellowstone" franchise, the brainchild of creator Taylor Sheridan, has captivated audiences with its complex storytelling centered on the Dutton family's relentless struggle to preserve their vast Montana ranch. The universe began with the flagship series, starring Kevin Costner as the patriarch John Dutton, before expanding with successful prequels. "1883" delved into the earliest documented history of the family, featuring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton. Later, "1923" brought in Hollywood heavyweights Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, further exploring the hardships and origins that shaped the family's legacy and their connection to the land.

Much of the fan speculation surrounding "1944" has focused on the potential return of Spencer Dutton, the younger son of James and Margaret, who was portrayed by Brandon Sklenar in "1923." Spencer’s storyline in "1923" ended with considerable emotional weight, particularly after the tragic death of his partner, Alex. Brandon Sklenar himself has publicly expressed interest in reprising his role. In an April 2025 interview following the "1923" series finale, he remarked, "Listen, I know that '1944' is a thing that they are planning on doing here, and maybe we see Spencer in 1944."

Beyond Spencer, other potential plotlines have been discussed, including exploring the early life of John Dutton II, who would be 21 years old in 1944 and could potentially be serving in World War II. The series could also follow Elizabeth Dutton after the death of her husband. The historical backdrop of 1944, deeply intertwined with World War II, presents numerous rich storytelling opportunities for how the Dutton family navigated a nation at war and its impact on their lives and the ranch.

The "Yellowstone" universe has continued its rapid expansion even as "1944" remained quietly in development. "Dutton Ranch," a sequel series, premiered on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026, and is set to conclude its season in July. This series follows Rip Wheeler, played by Cole Hauser, and Beth Dutton, portrayed by Kelly Reilly, as they embark on a new life in South Texas. Another recent addition is "Marshals," a CBS police procedural starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, now working as a U.S. Marshal. Furthermore, "The Madison," a new series featuring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, introduced a different family story set in Montana’s Madison River Valley, further diversifying the franchise.

These ongoing storylines and new series underscore the commercial strength and enduring appeal of the Dutton narrative, as well as Taylor Sheridan's continued commitment to expanding this fictional world. The confirmation of "1944's" active development reinforces that, despite the conclusion of the original series and the proliferation of other spin-offs, the foundational historical timeline of the Dutton family remains a pivotal focus for future storytelling. Fans can now look forward to seeing how the family navigated the challenges of the mid-20th century, adding another crucial layer to their legendary struggle for land and legacy.
