Hip-HopClifford Joseph Harris Jr., known globally as T.I., just picked up a major honor for his work that stretches far beyond the mic. The Atlanta legend was presented with the Beacon of Industry Award by the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association (BESLA) at their mid-year conference, held from May 28-30, 2026, in his hometown.
The award, presented on May 29, 2026, isn't just another trophy; it’s a nod to his decades-long commitment to building Black wealth through diverse ventures. From platinum-selling albums to impactful real estate developments and community initiatives, T.I. has consistently put his resources into uplifting the culture.

Chiquita Banks, President of the BESLA Board, spoke to the heart of the recognition. She stated that Mr. Harris truly embodies the Beacon of Industry Award, highlighting his status as a multi-hyphenate who has excelled across various media. Banks specifically pointed out his work as a seasoned real estate developer, an activist, and a philanthropist, emphasizing that “Tip puts his money where his mouth is.” She further noted that BESLA, an organization primarily composed of attorneys, was particularly impressed by T.I.'s dedication to hiring Black lawyers for his extensive business ventures, underscoring his commitment to economic empowerment within the Black community.
T.I.’s journey in music began with his debut album, “I’m Serious,” released on October 9, 2001. He is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary later in 2026. A pioneer of trap music, he’s racked up multiple platinum albums that consistently charted on Billboard. His most recent project, “The L.I.B.R.A.,” dropped in 2020. Looking ahead, he announced at the 2026 Grammy Awards that his upcoming album, “Kill the King,” slated for release on May 13, 2026, will be his final one. The lead single, “Let Em Know,” produced by Pharrell, was released in February 2026. T.I. shared his reasoning for stepping away from recording, explaining, “I think I have many gifts that God has given me that I can spend more time and attention on and spend more time at home with my family and my grandchildren.” He added, “It's a blessing, man. 'LET 'EM KNOW,' produced by Pharrell. My first single off of my final album. I'm gonna be done. They should know it. I've said it before. It's time.”
Beyond music, T.I.’s entrepreneurial spirit shines through in several other arenas. He ventured into stand-up comedy, releasing his debut special, “Cheaper Than Therapy,” in December 2025. He is also embarking on “The King Succession Tour” in July and August 2026, which will feature his sons, Domani and King Harris. In film, he’s been a producer with Grand Hustle Films since August 2010, creating content that resonates with audiences. His fashion empire includes the clothing brands Akoo and Hustle Gang, co-founded with Jason Geter. Akoo, an acronym for “A King Of Oneself,” launched in late 2008 and marked its tenth anniversary in December 2018, both brands having built significant followings.

However, it's his real estate development work that truly anchors T.I.'s vision for Atlanta's future and his commitment to Black wealth building. In November 2023, he celebrated the opening of the Intrada Westside affordable housing complex in Atlanta’s Grove Park neighborhood. This transformative project, located at 2176 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, turned a former shopping center that once housed a Kmart and a Giant Food into 143 affordable housing units. Notably, 25 of these units are specifically allocated for homeless youth. T.I. initially purchased the shuttered shopping center in 2019 and later collaborated with the Missouri-based Vecino Group, with construction beginning in 2021. This development is a key part of his “Buy Back The Block” initiative, which he launched in 2017 in partnership with the city and Dynasty Real Estate Development.
The impact of Intrada Westside was recognized by city officials. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony in November 2023, acknowledging the project as a crucial part of the city’s broader efforts to deliver affordable homes. Terri Lee, Chief Operating Officer of Atlanta Housing, also praised the initiative, stating, “Intrada Westside is a remarkable multi-family development that stands out for its dedication to affordable housing and for providing housing for persons who were homeless.” Lee added that “Atlanta Housing is proud to play a part in making this property fully affordable and sustainable.”
This Beacon of Industry Award is more than just a personal accolade; it underscores a larger narrative about artists leveraging their platforms for tangible community impact. T.I.'s consistent efforts in creating economic opportunities, from hiring Black professionals to developing affordable housing, exemplify a dedication to not just talking about change, but actively building it. His strategic investments in real estate and community programs are setting a powerful example for how cultural figures can directly contribute to the economic well-being and stability of the communities that support them.
As T.I. prepares to release his final album and continues his work in real estate and philanthropy, his legacy is clearly evolving beyond his musical achievements. This award solidifies his position as a multifaceted leader whose commitment to Black wealth and community development is making a lasting difference in Atlanta and beyond.
