Tank Breaks Charlie Wilson's Adult R&B Record With "Yes"Culture

Tank Breaks Charlie Wilson's Adult R&B Record With "Yes"

1d ago

Tank just reached a milestone that puts him in rare company. His new single "Yes" climbed to the top of the Adult R&B Airplay chart, and it gives him the most No. 1 hits by any male artist in the chart's 33-year history.

The song is Tank's 12th No. 1 on the chart. It knocked October London's "Silent Treatment" out of the top spot, which the song had held for one week. "Yes" had been the runner-up before the move, and the chart dated October 17, 2026 made it official. The win ends a tie with Charlie Wilson, who reached 11 No. 1s with "Keep Me In Love" in October 2025.

The chart run is about more than one week at the top. "Yes" was the most played song on panel-contributing adult R&B radio stations in the United States during the tracking week of October 2 to 8, according to Luminate data. It also posted the biggest gain in plays of any song on the format that week. On the Mediabase U.S. R&B chart, the track jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 for the week of October 10, and it has now spent 13 weeks on that chart.

Alicia Keys still leads the Adult R&B Airplay chart with 14 No. 1s, and Tank now sits in second place. Toni Braxton has 11, while Mary J. Blige and Usher each have 10. Bruno Mars, Kem, and Maxwell have nine apiece.

Getting back to this point was not easy. Tank disclosed his hearing loss in 2021, saying he was losing hearing in his right ear and struggling with sound in his left. He also described dizziness and trouble walking a straight line while he sought treatment. The health scare forced him to slow down during a period when his career was growing.

He later described his 2022 album "R&B Money" as his last. For a stretch, it looked like his time at the top of the radio charts might be behind him. In a recent interview, Tank recalled how hearing loss and vertigo disrupted his daily life. He said medication affected his sleep and eating, and that he struggled to work out. "I didn't recognize myself. I couldn't hear myself," Tank said. "First time I was ever out of shape in life." He talked about rebuilding his fitness and his confidence so he could return to the stage.

The new single is built on a classic. "Yes" interpolates "Say Yes" by the duo Floetry, which spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the same chart in 2003. Floetry members Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart are credited as songwriters on "Yes." The track brings a song from an earlier R&B era into Tank's new work, and listeners have responded to that connection.

Tank has been building radio success for years. His single "Please Don't Go" spent 10 weeks at No. 1 beginning May 19, 2007. "When We" followed with 11 weeks at the top beginning November 18, 2017. Other chart-toppers include "Can't Let It Show," "Slow" featuring J Valentine, "See Through Love" featuring Chris Brown, "Before We Get Started" featuring Fabolous, and "Gone," a 2025 collaboration with Aaliyah that was released after her death.

The immediate chase is connected to his latest album, "EXPERIENCE," his 11th studio album. It was released September 25 through R&B Money and BMG. Its earlier single "Control" reached No. 1 on the same chart and held the top spot for two weeks beginning March 28, 2026, which gave Tank a share of the male record before "Yes" moved him ahead. Tank has also kept busy outside the studio. He made his Broadway debut in Alicia Keys' "Hell's Kitchen," appeared in the fourth season of Hulu's "Reasonable Doubt," and has supported Usher and Chris Brown on tour.

Tank addressed the milestone in a statement. "Having a No. 1 song is always special, but being No. 1 in the history of the platform is just something different. Just keep singing the R&B music you love and God will do the rest." He also described the new album as a risk he was willing to take. "EXPERIENCE is exactly what the title says it is. I pushed myself on this one, stepping into dance, gospel, country, sounds people might not expect from me. After 30 years, I'm still growing, still finding new ways to connect with people."

The record matters because it shows that an artist can come back from a serious health setback and still reach the top of a format that is hard to crack. Adult R&B radio has long been a place where veteran singers keep their careers alive, and Tank's chart history places him among the names listeners already know well. His climb also gives longtime fans a reason to pay attention to how a new album lands when it arrives on the radio.

Tank has also said that his next stage of the career will involve a live event. He is set to headline the inaugural Rock The Bells: I Need Luv Cruise in fall 2027. For now, the focus is on whether "Yes" can hold its place on the chart and whether "EXPERIENCE" keeps building momentum across radio and touring. Tank has shown that patience and persistence can pay off, and he has the numbers to prove it.
