Steph Curry Locks In Warriors Future With $116M Extension

3w ago

Stephen Curry is cementing his legacy as a one-franchise legend. The Golden State Warriors have locked down their superstar point guard with a significant contract extension, ensuring he remains the face of the team for years to come. This move not only solidifies Curry's place in NBA history but also gives the Warriors crucial flexibility as they navigate their future.

Reports from ESPN's Shams Charania confirmed the deal: a two-year, $116 million extension for Curry. The agreement, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, was officially announced by the team on a Friday in late September 2026. This timing, just before the regular season kicked off, put an end to all the chatter about where Curry would finish his career.

What's notable is that Curry reportedly agreed to a discount, taking approximately $20 million less than the maximum $136.7 million he was eligible to receive. This decision by the veteran guard is a major win for the Warriors, providing them with an estimated $64 million in salary cap flexibility for the 2027 offseason. That kind of financial wiggle room could be instrumental in keeping key players or bringing in new talent to rebuild the roster.

The NBA's "over-38 rule" played a role in shaping the terms, limiting Curry to a maximum two-year extension. By the start of the 2026-27 season, Curry will be 38 years old, making this extension a strategic move to keep him in the Bay Area while adhering to league rules.

This latest deal means Curry could potentially play his entire 20-year NBA career with the Golden State Warriors. That's a rare achievement in professional sports, a testament to his loyalty and the team's commitment. Only a few other legends like Dirk Nowitzki, Kobe Bryant, and Udonis Haslem have managed to play two decades or more with a single franchise.

Curry's history with the Warriors is marked by a series of significant contracts. In August 2021, he finalized a four-year, $215 million extension, a deal that made him the first player in NBA history to sign two contracts each worth over $200 million. That agreement was set to keep him with the team through the 2025-26 season.

Before these record-breaking deals, Curry famously signed a four-year, $44 million contract after his rookie deal. During that period, he was widely considered to be significantly underpaid given his burgeoning performance, which included leading the Warriors to an NBA championship in 2015. Despite the disparity, former Warriors general manager Bob Myers noted that Curry never publicly or privately complained about his contract status, highlighting his selfless approach to the game. Earlier in the week leading up to this new agreement, Curry himself had expressed a desire for "no drama" as training camp approached, stating he was "excited about getting back to work" and felt physically ready after the offseason.

Golden State Warriors General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. was quick to voice the organization's excitement about the extension. "We couldn't be more excited about reaching an agreement with Stephen and extending his historic career with the Warriors," Dunleavy stated publicly. He didn't hold back on praising Curry's impact, adding, "There has never been a better face to a franchise in professional sports history, both on and off the court, than Stephen Curry with the Warriors. He embodies everything this organization strives to represent through his legendary play on the court, his unique leadership and sacrifice, and his unmatched impact in the community."

Curry's place among the NBA's all-time greats is undisputed. Drafted seventh overall by the Warriors in 2009 out of Davidson, he has shattered numerous records. He stands as the NBA's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 4,248, and also holds records for threes made per game and three-point attempts per game. His career free-throw percentage of .912 is the highest in league history. Beyond the stats, Curry is a 12-time All-Star, has earned two MVP awards, a Finals MVP, and has led the Warriors to four NBA championships. He also leads the Warriors franchise in both points (26,528) and assists (6,743).

The timing of this extension comes as the Warriors face a period of transition. The team finished the previous 2025-26 season with a 37-45 record, their worst non-shortened season since 2010-11. They have also missed the playoffs in two of the last four years since their 2021-22 NBA Finals victory. Curry himself battled injuries last season, limiting him to 43 games due to issues including runner's knee, bone bruising, and a left quadriceps contusion and strain. Despite these setbacks, he still put up impressive numbers, averaging 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.1 steals in 30.9 minutes per game.

This new contract, combined with his previous earnings, positions Curry to become the highest on-court earner in NBA history. Should he exercise his player option for the 2028-29 season, his career earnings are projected to approach a staggering $650 million.

The extension not only secures Curry's future with the team but also sends a clear message about the Warriors' commitment to their franchise player. It ensures that one of the game's most influential figures will continue to lead the charge, potentially playing out his entire illustrious career in the same uniform, a rare and celebrated feat in the modern era of professional sports.
