A brutal heatwave tightened its grip on southwestern Utah, then the lights went out. More than 30,000 residents across Washington County, primarily near St. George, were plunged into darkness during one of the summer's most intense periods, with temperatures soaring to a blistering 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

The widespread power outage began around 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Initially, reports indicated that 14,480 Rocky Mountain Power customers were without electricity, but Dixie Power later estimated the total number of affected customers across Washington County to be closer to 30,000. The sudden loss of power transformed an already uncomfortable evening into a serious safety concern for many, cutting off air conditioning, refrigeration, and even reliable access to water.

St. George public information officer David Cordero confirmed the disruption's start time, noting, "The disruption began around 5:15 p.m." Cordero attributed the root of the problem to "infrastructure issues" originating with PacifiCorp, the parent company of Rocky Mountain Power. This major transmission problem impacted nearly every electricity provider in the region, according to Cordero. Dixie Power also confirmed that the outage stemmed from a significant transmission issue outside its own system, though specific details on the exact trigger remained unclear on Thursday night. Rocky Mountain Power indicated that a full explanation might require up to a week of extensive analysis of electrical equipment.

Utility crews from both Rocky Mountain Power and Dixie Power immediately mobilized to restore service. However, full restoration was a complex, phased process designed to prevent further strain on an already fragile grid. By approximately 7:30 p.m., power had returned to several critical services, including facilities necessary to bring additional local generation online. While Rocky Mountain Power reported re-establishing power to its affected consumers, Dixie Power continued to grapple with limited capacity, leading to the implementation of rolling blackouts.

Dixie Power's strategy involved rotating power access, typically allowing customers about one hour of electricity within every four-hour period. The company was actively working to install additional generators to boost capacity and stabilize its system. Eventually, Dixie Power's system was fully restored, but not before residents endured hours of intermittent service during a critical time.

The extreme heat significantly compounded the challenges. With temperatures only expected to drop into the mid-to-high 90s by 9 p.m. that Thursday, the lack of power meant no relief from the oppressive conditions. Beyond personal comfort, the outage directly impacted essential local infrastructure, most notably the water supply. Dammeron Valley Water Works urgently requested residents to reduce water usage, as the power failure had begun to interfere with pumping systems. Officials stressed the critical need for conservation to preserve water for basic household needs and emergency firefighting capabilities.

Public safety officials also reacted swiftly. St. George Police advised drivers to exercise extreme caution at intersections where traffic signals were dark, instructing them to treat these as four-way stops. They also asked residents to reserve 911 calls for actual emergencies, ensuring lines remained open for those in critical need. This incident underscored the recurring vulnerability of Southern Utah's power infrastructure, particularly during periods of high demand driven by severe weather.

This August 2026 outage was not an isolated incident but rather a stark reminder of ongoing concerns about the resilience of Utah's power grid, especially during the region's notoriously hot summers. Southern Utah regularly experiences triple-digit temperatures, which place immense stress on the electrical system. In June 2021, David Eskelsen, a representative for Rocky Mountain Power, reportedly stated that the system is "really sensitive to temperature," with peak demand occurring when temperatures exceed 100 degrees and nighttime cooling remains above 70 degrees. He also noted at the time that Rocky Mountain Power prepares all year for extreme summer weather by maintaining and expanding generation and transmission systems, and by forecasting peak demand and having reserve power available.

Rene Fleming of the St. George Energy Department echoed these concerns in June 2021, highlighting that multiple days exceeding 110 degrees would undoubtedly stress the entire county's system. Prior to the August 2026 incident, the city of St. George had already issued "orange alerts" and requested residents to conserve electricity due to persistent strain on the power grid. For instance, earlier in August 2026, St. George leaders had asked residents to conserve energy, particularly in the late afternoon, following equipment issues with one of their transmission providers the previous week.

Further back, in July 2024, David Cordero, then the communications and marketing director for the city of St. George, provided tips to save energy during a heatwave, advising against using ovens and heavy appliances during peak hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. These proactive measures illustrate a long-standing effort to manage energy demand in a challenging climate.

Another significant event occurred in June 2026, when Rocky Mountain Power initiated Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in parts of Southern Utah, affecting approximately 7,735 customers. These shutoffs were a preemptive measure taken due to extreme wildfire conditions. Carrie Laird, Rocky Mountain Power incident commander for that event, was quoted stating, "Public Safety Power Shutoffs are a last resort, and we understand the disruption they create for customers and communities. With Southern Utah facing unusually extreme wildfire conditions under a Particularly Dangerous Situation warning, our responsibility is to put safety first." These prior incidents collectively underscore the recurring challenges faced by Southern Utah's power infrastructure in balancing high demand with severe weather conditions.

The recent widespread outage in Washington County serves as a critical indicator of the ongoing need for robust infrastructure and effective community preparedness strategies. As the region continues to experience increasing temperatures and population growth, the reliability of the power grid remains a paramount concern for residents and local authorities alike, demanding continuous vigilance and investment to ensure essential services can withstand future climate challenges.
