Shemar Moore, Vivica A. Fox Ignite Drama with Y&R Return

1w ago

Shemar Moore made a celebrated comeback to "The Young and the Restless" in April 2026, stepping back into his iconic role as Malcolm Winters. This multi-episode arc generated significant fan enthusiasm, marking a notable reunion with fellow returning star Vivica A. Fox, who reprised her role as Dr. Stephanie Simmons.

The official announcement of Moore's homecoming came in February 2026, with CBS revealing that both actors began taping their scenes on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Moore's initial appearance in this storyline aired on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, with Vivica A. Fox's character also returning on the same day. Their emotional reunion as Malcolm and Stephanie was a central feature of the episode that aired on April 8, 2026. Set in Genoa City, the unfolding narrative promised "shocking and lasting implications for the residents," as Moore was slated to return to the CBS soundstages later in April 2026 to film additional scenes to conclude the arc.

The narrative driving Malcolm Winters' return was rooted in a serious medical crisis: his diagnosis with aplastic anemia, a severe blood disorder. This health challenge brought him back to Genoa City, providing a substantial dramatic foundation for his storyline that moved beyond a simple nostalgic cameo. During this return, a significant revelation emerged: Malcolm had another child, Holden Novak, with Dr. Stephanie Simmons. Holden Novak is portrayed by actor Nathan Owens.

Moore, born on April 20, 1970, in Oakland, California, began his career portraying Malcolm Winters on "The Young and the Restless" from 1994 to 2005. This role earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2000. He later gained further recognition for his work as Derek Morgan on CBS's "Criminal Minds" from 2005 to 2017 and as Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson on "S.W.A.T." from 2017 to 2025. Vivica A. Fox, who previously co-starred with Moore in the 2004 film *Motives*, returned to "The Young and the Restless" as Dr. Stephanie Simmons for the first time in over three decades, having last appeared in Genoa City in 1995. Her character, then a medical student, had a brief romantic relationship with Malcolm during her original run from 1994-1995.

Moore's return also saw him reunite with several members of the Winters family. Christel Khalil, who plays Malcolm's daughter Lily Winters, shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the set featuring Moore alongside Bryton James (Devon Hamilton) and Sean Dominic (Nathan 'Nate' Hastings Jr.). While Lily Winters is Malcolm's biological daughter, she was legally considered Neil Winters' daughter for a period. Nate Hastings is Malcolm's adoptive son, and Devon Hamilton is his adoptive nephew. Malcolm's history in Genoa City, a character created by William J. Bell and introduced in May 1994, includes a complex relationship with his brother Neil, a controversial encounter with Neil's wife Drucilla, and marriages to Olivia Hastings and Sofia Dupre.

Public statements and interviews captured the palpable excitement surrounding Moore's return. In promotional clips, Moore declared, "We're young, restless and reunited," with Fox adding, "That's right, Stephanie and Malcolm are back and bringing the drama," and urging viewers, "It all starts next week on 'Y&R'. Don't miss it." Moore expressed his enjoyment of working with Fox again, stating, "Just to be able to stand on stage with her and talk and mess with her, and for Malcolm and Stephanie to be back with the storyline that they created, which is interesting and obviously soapy dramatic, but fun to play, it wasn't work."

He further described the experience as "really just a reunion of sorts, a party of sorts, to celebrate what 'Young and Restless' has done for us, to really give us momentum in the game for us to continue to pursue our dreams. But Vivica is a hoot. She's funny, and she was finding humor in scenes where there wasn't humor. It was all good." Reflecting on his return to the show that launched his career, Moore commented, "I've created what I've created, so when I got the call to come back, the answer was yes....I feel humbled and honored and nostalgic." He humorously added about the volume of dialogue required, joking, "I just told them, please don't give me 124 pages. They were like, 'How about 50 or 60?' I was like, 'I'll take it!' I'm going to be a good listener; let Vivica and the rest of them do the talking!" In another lighthearted moment, he quipped, "I'm home baby. Blast from the past with too much dialogue. I had twenty-four pages. Hold on. I do eight pages in my day job and I make more money." Vivica A. Fox also shared a humorous observation about Moore, noting, "He has a Ferrari now, and I couldn't believe it. I was like, 'Whose racecar is this?' Shemar, you have a Ferrari?"

Moore's willingness to return to "The Young and the Restless," even with his busy schedule that included recently completing production on the *S.W.A.T. Exiles* spinoff, underscores the lasting importance of the soap opera to his career. He has consistently acknowledged the show as the starting point of his professional journey. This return is particularly significant as Moore has made several guest appearances over the years, including in 2014, 2019, and 2023. His 2019 and 2023 returns were notably tied to tributes for the late Kristoff St. John, who portrayed Malcolm's half-brother Neil Winters. Moore has expressed his dedication to honoring St. John, stating, "When it came to the great Neil Winters, I show up. Whatever it takes."

The return of both Moore and Fox, bringing back their characters Malcolm and Stephanie, represents a major moment for the long-running soap. It connects its rich past with current storylines and injects fresh dramatic energy into Genoa City, ensuring that the legacy of these beloved characters continues to evolve for a new generation of viewers while satisfying longtime fans.
