Reckond App Holds Brands Accountable to Black Consumers

Black consumers wield immense economic power in the United States, spending over $2.2 trillion annually. This significant market influence shapes product categories and draws corporate attention, especially during cultural moments, but it has historically struggled to translate into consistent corporate accountability. Now, a new platform is here to change that dynamic.

Seneca Connor, a licensed California attorney and seasoned entrepreneur from Northern California, is behind Reckond, a mobile application and browser extension that promises to bring transparency and accountability to corporate commitments toward the Black community. The app officially became available on the iOS App Store by May 16, 2026, with public reports detailing its launch emerging on May 27, 2026. Reckond aims to empower consumers by providing a clear, data-driven tool to measure brands' actual records against their public statements and marketing.

Reckond currently evaluates more than 800 companies on their racial equity performance, assigning each a score from 0 to 100 and a corresponding letter grade from A to F. These scores are curved against the entire population of brands within the system, offering a relative measure of performance. Connor personally developed the comprehensive scoring methodology, which relies exclusively on publicly available and verifiable data sources. This includes detailed information from Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filings, Federal Election Commission (FEC) political contribution records, and supplier diversity disclosures. The platform also integrates insights from the NAACP Black Consumer Advisory and the As You Sow Racial Justice Scorecard.

The scoring system is robust, evaluating brands across seven distinct dimensions. These include workforce diversity, which assesses Black representation at all levels from entry-level positions to executive and board roles, and supplier diversity, which examines documented spending with Black-owned and other minority-owned suppliers. Reckond also looks at political alignment, tracking contribution histories relative to the interests of the Black community, and crisis response, measuring how brands have handled critical racial justice moments. Furthermore, it evaluates Black spending and investment, assessing financial contributions to Black communities through avenues like advertising with Black-owned media, endowments to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), or community development funds.

Connor's journey to creating Reckond is marked by a deep commitment to justice and empowerment. She holds both a law degree and an MBA, bringing a unique blend of legal acumen and business savvy to her ventures. Her career began as a Deputy Public Defender for the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office, where she dedicated her efforts to defending indigent individuals and safeguarding their constitutional rights. Currently, she practices corporate immigration law, overseeing immigration and global mobility programs for a Fortune 15 company, demonstrating her expertise in complex corporate environments.

Beyond her legal career, Connor is a prolific entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of The Bag Icon LLC, a brand specializing in accessible luxury accessories that has garnered attention from major publications like Black Enterprise, Business Insider, Yahoo, and Essence. She also developed The Spotlight Program, an Instagram series specifically designed to highlight Black-owned businesses without charge, showcasing her long-standing dedication to supporting the community. Her personal story, shaped by resilience, motherhood, loss, and triumph, clearly informs her entrepreneurial drive and the mission behind Reckond.

The timing of Reckond's launch is particularly relevant given recent trends. Reports indicate a concerning acceleration of corporate rollbacks in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) commitments across Fortune 500 companies. This backdrop underscores the critical need for tools that empower consumers to hold brands accountable and ensure that economic power translates into meaningful, sustained change rather than fleeting performative gestures. Reckond steps into this void, offering a tangible way for consumers to make informed purchasing decisions that align with their values.

When users engage with the Reckond app or browser extension, they can easily search for a brand or visit a product page to instantly view that brand's racial equity score. Crucially, the platform also surfaces verified Black-owned alternatives within the same product category, complete with direct links leading straight to the respective Black-owned businesses' websites. This direct connection ensures that Black-owned businesses are the primary beneficiaries of the platform's traffic and visibility. Reckond operates without processing transactions or collecting commissions on sales, and listing in its directory is, and will remain, permanently free. The developer, Reckond LLC, has also emphasized user privacy, indicating that the platform does not collect any user data.

While specific public reactions from other figures or organizations to Reckond's debut have not yet been widely reported, the app enters a landscape populated by various financial technology tools. Unlike budgeting and savings apps such as EveryDollar, Simplifi, Rocket Money, YNAB, and Mint, or specialized apps like MoCaFi's Blueprint for homeownership among Black Americans, Reckond carves out a unique niche. Its singular focus on brand accountability for racial equity distinguishes it from personal financial management tools, highlighting a clear mission to drive systemic change rather than individual financial optimization.

Connor's entrepreneurial philosophy, as articulated in relation to her other venture, The Bag Icon, resonates deeply with Reckond's core objective. She once stated, "We've always believed that true luxury should empower, not exclude. The Icon Statement Ring continues our story — it's bold, elegant, and designed to remind women that they true luxury is what they bring to each bag or piece of jewelry; not the other way around." This sentiment of empowerment and intentionality is central to Reckond, aiming to equip consumers with the knowledge to make choices that truly reflect their values and contribute to a more equitable economic landscape. Reckond is set to become a vital resource for consumers seeking to put their spending power behind brands that genuinely commit to racial equity, marking a significant step towards greater corporate transparency.
