Nolan Shrugs Off Musk, Walsh Criticism for 'Odyssey' Casting

3d ago

Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated epic, "The Odyssey," is already stirring up major controversy months ahead of its July 17, 2026, release. The renowned filmmaker is catching heat for his casting decisions, particularly placing Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong'o in the dual role of Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra, and rapper Travis Scott as a bard. Despite the uproar from figures like entrepreneur Elon Musk and conservative commentator Matt Walsh, Nolan is firmly shrugging off the backlash, calling the early criticism "irrelevant."

Nyong'o, a Kenyan-Mexican actress who rose to international fame with an Oscar win for "12 Years a Slave," has ignited a "race-swapping" debate. Critics argue that her casting as Helen of Troy, a character traditionally depicted as fair-skinned and blonde in Greek mythology, deviates from the source material and is historically inaccurate. Nyong'o has also starred in major films such as "Black Panther" and "Us," showcasing her range and talent.

Travis Scott, known for his psychedelic trap music and high-energy performances, is set to appear as a bard, widely believed to be Demodocus, the blind Phaeacian bard from Homer's epic. While Scott has achieved multiple number-one albums, his casting has also drawn scrutiny due to his limited acting experience and the lingering public controversy surrounding the 2021 Astroworld Festival tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of ten attendees in a crowd crush. Some viewers have expressed discomfort with his prominent role given these past events.

Nolan, a British-American filmmaker celebrated for his innovative storytelling, non-linear narratives, and preference for practical effects, addressed the criticism directly in May 2026. He told *The Telegraph* that these early conversations are "irrelevant" because no one criticizing the film has actually seen it yet. "Comes with the territory," Nolan stated. "But look, these conversations that happen before people see the film, they're always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet."

The director further elaborated on his choices. For Nyong'o, he told *Elle* magazine in May 2026 that he cast her for the "strength and the poise" he believed the character embodied. Regarding Scott, Nolan explained his reasoning to *Time* magazine, also in May 2026, stating, "I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap." Scott had previously collaborated with Nolan on music for the 2020 film "Tenet," where Nolan praised his "insights into the musical and narrative mechanism." A trailer released in January reportedly showed Scott narrating an account of the Trojan War to Tom Holland's character, Telemachus.

Nolan also drew a parallel to past casting controversies. He specifically recalled the initial skepticism surrounding Heath Ledger's casting as the Joker in "The Dark Knight." At the time, Ledger was primarily known for romantic comedies, leading many fans to question his suitability for the iconic villain role. Ledger's performance ultimately earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Nolan reflected on this, noting that "fans of the property, even when we were doing something that was not what they would have done, enjoyed the sincerity of the attempt to put as good a version of it on screen as we could."

The backlash intensified with pointed comments from public figures. Elon Musk, the entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, and owner of X, claimed Nolan "wants the awards" and accused him of "race-swapping characters to chase Oscar eligibility." Musk further asserted that the casting "insulted Homer's original text," which he noted described Helen as fair-skinned and blonde. Conservative commentator Matt Walsh, a host for The Daily Wire, went even further, stating, "not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong'o is the most beautiful woman in the world" and labeling Nolan a "coward" for his casting choice. The controversy has even extended internationally, with *Le Monde* reporting on a debate in Greece, fueled by far-right Greek figures, concerning Hollywood's interpretation of Greek mythology.

Lupita Nyong'o herself addressed the criticism in May 2026. "You can't perform beauty," she stated, adding, "I'm not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not." She affirmed that "Our cast is representative of the world." The film's official social media accounts have reportedly restricted comments as the online backlash escalated.

"The Odyssey" represents Nolan's most ambitious and expensive film to date, with an estimated budget of $250 million. It is notably the first feature film in history to be shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, utilizing newly developed lighter and quieter versions of the technology. Nolan, born on July 30, 1970, and fresh off the multi-Academy Award-winning success of "Oppenheimer" in March 2024, began writing the screenplay for "The Odyssey" in March 2024, secured the project with Universal Pictures by October 2024, and officially announced the title in December 2024. Principal photography spanned from February to August 2025 across numerous international locations, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Malta, in addition to soundstages at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. The ensemble cast also includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, and Elliot Page as the Greek soldier Sinon.

Nolan's reputation for meticulous historical and technical accuracy in other production aspects, such as building a fully seaworthy ship and avoiding a traditional orchestra for the score, has only intensified the scrutiny over his casting decisions. This debate highlights the ongoing tension between artistic freedom and fidelity to source material, particularly when adapting classic works for a modern global audience. It also underscores the power of social media and prominent public figures to shape narratives around major cultural releases.

As the July 17, 2026 release date approaches, Nolan remains steadfast in his vision. The director has made it clear he is not changing anything based on pre-release noise, setting the stage for audiences to finally experience his interpretation of Homer's ancient Greek epic and judge for themselves whether his bold casting choices pay off.
