Nelly and Ashanti Season 2 Tracks Her Masters Fight and His Road Grind

1d ago

Nelly and Ashanti are back on screen, and this time the cameras are following two very different kinds of grind. She is working to own her music. He is dealing with what years on the road have done to his body.

Peacock confirmed Thursday that the couple's docuseries, Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together, returns for a second season. All eight episodes arrive November 19 on the streamer. The network teased the season on social media with the line "Business, family, and a whole lot of love," and the promo leans hard into the business side of the couple's life next to the personal.

The season's central storyline follows Ashanti as she re-records her 2002 self-titled debut album. Reports indicate the original album came out through Murder Inc. and Def Jam, produced hits including "Foolish," "Happy" and "Baby," and debuted atop the Billboard 200. The album earned triple-platinum certification. Ashanti did not own the original master recordings, so the new versions are her way of creating masters she controls.

The season also tracks her life between St. Louis and New York City. She moves between the two cities while working on new music and spending time with longtime friends who help keep her grounded. Motherhood, live performances and those friendships all sit alongside the recording work in the season synopsis.

Her plan is not new. Ashanti first talked about remaking her debut in 2021 on The Tamron Hall Show, where she stressed the need to understand record contracts and credited her legal team for guidance. That same year, the late Murder Inc. cofounder Irv Gotti, who publicly said he owned the original masters, criticized her decision to re-record.

Nelly's storyline centers on the physical toll of years of nonstop touring. Reports indicate he is reflecting on that strain at this stage of his life and wondering how much longer he can keep up the pace. Coverage from Urban Mag says he is also starting to think seriously about what the next chapter of his career could look like.

An unexpected family loss also brings renewed attention to what matters most to him. Public coverage does not detail the loss, and the season is not expected to be built around it.

The couple's show debuted June 26, 2025, with the first season. Peacock said the eight-episode docuseries was its second-highest-reaching unscripted original freshman series. In March 2026, the network ordered a second season, with production set to begin that month.

The pair's personal history runs deep. They began dating in 2003, reunited in 2023 and married that same year. They are raising their 2-year-old son, Kareem, and reports indicate they also reflect on attending Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's wedding ceremony this past summer. Nelly's earlier screen work includes Nellyville, which aired on BET in 2014 and 2015, the mockumentary Real Husbands of Hollywood, and the film The Longest Yard.

In a teaser for the season, Ashanti said, "It's so important to show women's empowerment, and understanding the power of ownership is major." In an earlier interview, she put it even more directly: "I think it's really important to stress the importance of ownership. Owning your records, owning your masters." She also said hearing thousands of fans sing "Foolish," lyrics she wrote more than two decades ago, remains a highlight of performing. The teaser shows her thanking Fat Joe for supporting her through the process. Reports indicate she held an intimate listening event for friends and family on June 17 to celebrate the finished project.

That same earlier interview also showed the couple's offstage chemistry. Ashanti named Nelly as her favorite collaborator. When he joined the video call, he joked, "Just making sure," and kissed her cheek.

The season matters because it puts a music industry fight over ownership in front of a mainstream audience. Artists have argued for years about who controls their recordings and who profits from them. Ashanti's project gives fans a look at what re-recording looks like from the inside, and it shows how much of that work depends on understanding the contracts behind the music.

Nelly's storyline adds a different kind of stakes. Touring is the engine of many hip-hop careers, and his story puts a human face on what that schedule costs over time. Paired with her push for control, the season connects two long-running conversations about ownership and endurance in Black music.

Season 2 arrives in full on November 19. The storylines already on the table are her recordings, his touring and the family life that ties both together. Those threads are what Peacock is putting at the center of the season.
