Jet Phynx Unveils "Camera Time": A Cinematic Hip-Hop Universe

5d ago

Independent creative force Jet Phynx is gearing up to launch his latest project, "Camera Time," an immersive hip-hop experience that defies traditional album releases. This ambitious endeavor intertwines music, film, artificial intelligence, and a sharp commentary on media obsession, promising a new kind of artistic engagement for audiences.

At the heart of "Camera Time" is Jet Phynx's alter ego, "The Shooter," a masked filmmaker and world-builder navigating a society fixated on fame, cameras, Hollywood, and the relentless pressure of online visibility. The full album is slated for release in late May 2026, building on the momentum of its lead single and accompanying visual experience that debuted earlier the same month. An auto-generated YouTube track for "Camera Time" also made its public appearance on May 20, 2026, offering an early glimpse into the project's musical landscape.

Jet Phynx, born Parris Duncan, hails from Wilmington, Delaware. His early life was steeped in music, influenced by his father, Frederick Duncan, a dedicated jazz enthusiast, and his great uncle, the legendary drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. A pivotal moment in Duncan's life came with his father's battle with throat cancer and subsequent loss of vocal cords. His father's dying wish for Phynx to pursue music—"The world didn't get to hear me. Make sure they hear you. Be my voice"—profoundly shaped his path. This emotional experience led Duncan to adopt the stage name Jet Phynx, a name he conceived from feeling like a "jet" combined with a friend's suggestion of a "phoenix rising up from the ashes" after his father's passing.

Phynx initially embarked on a fashion merchandise major at the University of Delaware in 2004 but soon left to intern at Interscope Records in Los Angeles. During his time there, he witnessed the production of 50 Cent's groundbreaking debut album, "Get Rich or Die Trying," an experience that undoubtedly shaped his understanding of the music industry. In 2010, he co-founded the band Typical Friday Night (TFN) with Brawdway, experimenting with a fusion of American hip-hop and Korean pop-dance. His debut single, "Jiggle It," arrived in 2012, and his independent album reportedly sold over 12,000 units globally. His music career saw him perform backstage with Lady Gaga, open for Kansas, and even earn the moniker "the next Black Eyed Peas" from Elle Canada. He also walked the red carpet at the Video Music Awards and Billboard's Grammy afterparty.

By 2015, however, Phynx experienced burnout and returned to Elkton, Maryland. He leveraged his industry connections to pivot into videography, crafting music videos for a range of emerging artists. This transition ultimately led to the establishment of Jet Phynx Films in 2017. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, the film production and creative agency quickly gained recognition as a "trailblazer" for its work in entertainment and lifestyle branding, serving a diverse clientele from major brands to independent artists. Phynx himself describes his role on LinkedIn as "The Shooter — cinematographer, director and overall visual creative," a description that directly aligns with his alter ego in the "Camera Time" project. The team at Jet Phynx Films includes Anthony "Ozprana" Osborne as VP, Brent "Ferg" Ferguson as Social Manager, Walter Spivey handling Public Relations, and Mike "Benni Black" Capel as Director of Photography. Osborne also co-created the "Reel Talk" podcast with Phynx in 2022, a platform that explores the journey of creativity within urban culture.

Beyond his musical and film production ventures, Jet Phynx is also the co-creator and festival founder of the Dirty Popcorn Black Film Festival. Hosted and sponsored by the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, the festival is dedicated to discovering, uplifting, and celebrating diverse voices among filmmakers of color from Delaware and the surrounding region, while also working to preserve local Black cinema. The festival's unique name, "Dirty Popcorn," originated from a candid moment during a film shoot. As Phynx recounted, they were shooting a scene with popcorn in their hands, and upon looking down at the ground, the name clicked. The event has seen considerable success, leading to a five-year contract with the museum to ensure its annual return. The 2nd annual festival took place in August 2023, and the 4th annual event is scheduled for August 9-10, 2025, at the Delaware Art Museum, with a theme celebrating "The Camera" and its evolution in storytelling. Iz Balleto, Community Engagement Specialist at the Delaware Art Museum, has expressed the museum's strong commitment, stating, "We want this to grow. We want this to give light to all the BIPOC talent. We're going deeper with our stories." Phynx actively encourages networking at the festival, remarking, "I want creatives to come network."

"Camera Time" is envisioned as far more than just a collection of songs; it is an immersive cinematic universe crafted to be a living world that audiences can follow and connect with emotionally. Phynx articulated this vision, stating, "This project isn’t just about songs. It’s about building a living world people can watch, follow, and become emotionally connected to. Imagine if a movie director became a rapper and started turning every release into part of a bigger cinematic universe." The project intentionally blurs the traditional boundaries between artist, director, and digital storyteller, drawing inspiration from a wide array of sources, including MTV's golden era, Michael Jackson's iconic visuals, dystopian sci-fi films, and the pervasive nature of contemporary internet addiction. Each release from "Camera Time" is designed to serve as another chapter within the broader "Dirty Popcorn" universe, an expanding multimedia narrative that delves into the evolution of creativity, celebrity, technology, and visual culture. Zach Phillips, creative director at Short Order Production House in Wilmington, has described Phynx as "an experimental guy" who "is always trying to push the limits and do something different."

Jet Phynx's multidisciplinary approach with "Camera Time" reflects a growing trend in entertainment, where artists seek deeper, more interactive ways to engage their audience beyond traditional formats. By fusing his extensive background in filmmaking with his musical ambitions and a keen eye for digital culture, Phynx is positioning himself at the forefront of a new wave of hybrid storytelling. This project is not just an album; it’s an invitation to explore a meticulously constructed world where every beat, frame, and digital effect serves a larger narrative, challenging listeners and viewers to consider their own relationship with media and fame.
