Ice-T is making a full comeback to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for its 28th season, a move that will surely ease fan concerns after his noticeably reduced presence in the last season. The veteran actor and hip-hop icon confirmed he'll be back in every episode, signaling a return to form for his beloved character, Sergeant Odafin "Fin" Tutuola.

The announcement came during a July 2026 appearance on "The TMZ Podcast," where Ice-T, born Tracy Lauren Marrow, directly addressed the questions surrounding his screen time. His diminished role in Season 27, which ran from September 25, 2025, to May 14, 2026, was reportedly a "business decision." Ice-T explained in November 2025 interviews that budgetary constraints were the primary factor, particularly with the return of actress Kelli Giddish as Detective Amanda Rollins to a full-time series regular capacity. Giddish had previously left as a regular after Season 24 in December 2022, only making guest appearances before her full comeback, reportedly championed by lead actress Mariska Hargitay.

Ice-T's tenure on Law & Order: SVU is historic. Since joining the cast in 2000, his portrayal of Sergeant Tutuola has made him the longest-running male series actor in U.S. primetime history. Before his iconic role on NBC, Ice-T forged a path as an underground rapper in the 1980s, signing with Sire Records in 1987 and releasing his debut album, Rhyme Pays. He later founded Rhyme $yndicate Records, achieving further success with albums like Power in 1988. His acting career took off with a major role as police detective Scotty Appleton in New Jack City in 1991, following earlier small parts in films such as Breakin' in 1984.

Ice-T recounted the candid conversation he had with producers about his reduced screen time. He stated they told him, "Ice, we'll have you come in and out this year." When he directly asked if he was being "kicked off the show," he was reassured with a firm, "No way. We can't imagine Law & Order without you." He expressed his understanding of the situation, acknowledging, "It's just basically business. They brought Kelli back. At the end of the day, they couldn't keep both of us on both times, as far as budget-wise."

He noted that the extra free time allowed him to pursue other professional opportunities, as a full five-day-a-week filming schedule typically limits his ability to take on outside projects. He also mused about fan sentiment, stating, "I am kind of glad the fans are upset. What if I was missing and nobody cared?" Within the show's narrative, Fin's reduced presence in Season 27 was explained by a gunshot wound sustained in the season premiere, leading to his recovery and gradual return to duty.
