Get ready to pay more to send those holiday gifts. UPS, FedEx, and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) have all announced hefty increases to their holiday shipping surcharges for the 2026 peak season. Basic residential Ground rates are set to climb approximately 23% to 25% higher than what we saw in the previous year.

These new fees aren't waiting for Black Friday, with some kicking off as early as late September. The collective move by nearly every major carrier means that moving packages during the year-end rush will come with a significantly higher price tag, a cost that will likely trickle down to both sellers and consumers.

FedEx was an early mover, confirming its 2026 U.S. peak season surcharges on July 22, 2026. Their plan rolls out in phases, with maximum rates in effect from November 23 through December 27, 2026. All fees are scheduled to conclude on January 17, 2027. Earlier surcharges for additional handling, oversized packages, and Ground Unauthorized Package charges will begin on September 28, 2026. Demand surcharges for services like Express, Ground Residential, Home Delivery, and Ground Economy will follow on October 26, 2026.

Specifically, FedEx Ground Residential and Home Delivery will see a $0.50 per package surcharge from October 26 through November 22, 2026. This jumps to $0.80 per package during the peak period of November 23 through December 27, before returning to $0.50 until January 17, 2027. That $0.80 peak rate marks a 23.1% increase over the $0.65 maximum charged during the 2025 holiday season. Other FedEx increases include an Additional Handling charge ranging from $8.80 to $11.85 and an Oversize charge from $95.75 to $117.25, which will also apply to international ground shipments. The Ground Economy demand surcharge will range from $2.55 to $4.05 per package.

UPS followed suit on August 26, 2026, publishing its updated Demand Surcharge schedule. Their charges for oversized and nonstandard packages will begin on September 27, 2026, with broader residential Ground and Air surcharges taking effect on October 25, 2026. The highest rates for UPS will apply from November 22 through December 26, 2026, with all fees active through January 16, 2027. For UPS Ground Residential and Ground Saver packages, a $0.50 surcharge will apply during the initial and final holiday periods, increasing to $0.75 during the November 22 through December 26 peak. This is an increase from $0.40 and $0.60, respectively, in the previous year. Air surcharges are rising approximately 22% to 23%, while Additional Handling, Large Package, and Over Maximum demand fees are increasing by as much as 10%. UPS also implements a “Higher Volume Shipper” surcharge, which can add $2.65 per Ground Residential package during peak-of-peak weeks for shippers whose volume reaches 175% of their baseline.

The U.S. Postal Service isn't sitting this out either. On August 25, 2026, USPS filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) regarding its own temporary price changes for certain package products. These changes, approved by the governors of the Postal Service, are slated to take effect on October 4, 2026, and remain in place until January 17, 2027, pending favorable review by the PRC. Services like Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select will all be impacted, affecting both retail and commercial customers.
