HCA Healthcare Acquires CHCP, Bolstering Healthcare Workforce

5d ago

A major shift is underway in healthcare education. HCA Healthcare, Inc., a national healthcare provider, announced on May 27, 2026, a definitive agreement to acquire The College of Health Care Professions (CHCP). This strategic move is expected to significantly impact how working adults access careers in the high-demand healthcare industry, directly bolstering the talent pipeline for HCA Healthcare's extensive network of facilities.

The financial terms of the agreement were not publicly disclosed. The acquisition, which brings together Nashville-based HCA Healthcare and Houston-headquartered CHCP, remains subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. Observers suggest this deal signals a heightened focus on integrating educational pathways directly into healthcare operations to meet pressing workforce needs.

CHCP's journey began in 1988, founded by physicians of the MacGregor Medical Association in the Texas Medical Center. Its initial purpose was to provide in-house training for allied health staff, supporting the association's growth. By 1990, the institution received approval from the Texas Workforce Commission, enabling it to offer programs to a broader student population.

Since then, CHCP has expanded significantly, now educating over 8,000 students annually across 10 campuses throughout Texas, with locations in major cities like Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, McAllen, and San Antonio. The college also offers extensive online programs. With more than 20 accredited programs, including Medical Assisting, Sonography, Surgical Technology, Radiologic Technology, and Medical Coding and Billing, CHCP has trained over 52,000 students since its inception.

Further solidifying its educational reach, CHCP acquired the Medical Technology Management Institute (MTMI) in 2019. MTMI, established in 1989 and based in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, specializes in continuing education and training for imaging professionals nationwide. This includes radiologic technologists, mammographers, sonographers, medical physicists, and physicians. MTMI alone has served 180,000 students and awarded 1.76 million credits.

HCA Healthcare, with its vast network of 189 hospitals and approximately 2,600 ambulatory sites of care across 20 states and the United Kingdom, has long collaborated with CHCP. This relationship has spanned decades, involving program advisory boards, clinical site placements, and career placement initiatives. A notable example of their partnership occurred in 2023, when HCA Healthcare teamed up with CHCP to launch a 12-week Medical Assistant training program. This initiative was designed to upskill existing HCA colleagues and create a robust talent stream for HCA's urgent care centers across Texas, successfully placing over 100 graduates within HCA Healthcare.

Sam Hazen, CEO of HCA Healthcare, commented on the acquisition, acknowledging CHCP's impact. “The College of Health Care Professions has built a strong legacy of preparing skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals,” Hazen stated. He emphasized the joint vision, adding, “Together, we are investing in the future of healthcare and strengthening the talent pipeline that will serve patients and communities.” Hazen is a 41-year veteran of HCA Healthcare, having been appointed CEO on January 1, 2019, after holding several senior leadership roles, including president and chief operating officer.

Eric Bing, Chancellor and CEO of CHCP, will continue to lead the organization following the acquisition. Bing expressed his enthusiasm for the new alignment, remarking, “CHCP is excited to be part of HCA Healthcare.” He further articulated the shared objectives, stating, “Our goal is for our shared commitment to adult learner success, academic excellence and workforce readiness to help increase opportunities for aspiring healthcare professionals and make a positive impact in communities across the country.”

This acquisition is a significant escalation of HCA Healthcare's broader strategy to vertically integrate education into its operations, directly addressing the persistent national labor shortage in the U.S. healthcare industry. In 2020, HCA Healthcare acquired a majority ownership in Galen College of Nursing, one of the largest educators of nurses in the U.S., subsequently expanding its footprint from five to 25 campuses nationwide. The company also operates Research College of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri, and HCA Florida Mercy College of Nursing in Miami, Florida. In 2025, HCA Healthcare supported the launch of Pepperdine University's School of Nursing within the College of Health Sciences.

Beyond direct acquisitions, the HCA Healthcare Foundation has demonstrated substantial commitment to supporting healthcare career pathways. This includes a $1 million commitment in 2024 to the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations and grants totaling $2.35 million to Educate Texas in 2022 and 2025. These initiatives underscore the company's dedication to workforce development and nurturing the next generation of caregivers.

The integration of CHCP into HCA Healthcare’s ecosystem is expected to provide unparalleled access to clinical placements within HCA’s vast network. This will offer CHCP graduates a streamlined pathway to employment, a distinct advantage over independent vocational schools. The move solidifies HCA Healthcare’s position not just as a provider, but as a comprehensive developer of healthcare talent, shaping the future of the industry's workforce.
