Euphoria's Penultimate Episode "Rain or Shine" Airs Tonight

1w ago

The wait is over for fans of HBO's critically acclaimed drama series Euphoria, as the third season's highly anticipated seventh episode, titled "Rain or Shine," is set to premiere tonight, Sunday, May 24, 2026. The new installment will air at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and will also be available for streaming on HBO Max, leading into the season finale, "In God We Trust," scheduled for May 31, 2026.

Tonight's episode picks up the high-stakes narrative following last week's dramatic events. Viewers last saw Rue Bennett, portrayed by Emmy-winning actress Zendaya, in a precarious situation in the California desert, interpreting a burning Joshua tree as a divine sign. This follows a harrowing near-death experience in Episode 5, "This Little Piggy," where crime lord Alamo Brown's henchmen, Bishop and G, buried Rue up to her neck, suspecting her of being a snitch. After her escape, Rue reportedly warned Laurie, the drug dealer she's indebted to, that "Alamo tried to kill me, and he's gonna do the same to you." The upcoming episode is expected to delve deeper into the consequences of Rue's mission as a DEA informant, the ongoing surveillance, and the shifting power dynamics within Laurie's criminal network.

Season 3 of Euphoria has been a long time coming for fans. The series premiered its latest season on April 12, 2026, marking a significant return after its second season concluded back in February 2022. The extensive four-year hiatus was attributed to a confluence of factors, including the global COVID-19 pandemic, the impactful 2023 Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and the increasingly demanding schedules of the show's now globally recognized cast members. Furthermore, creator and showrunner Sam Levinson's work on his other series, The Idol, contributed to the production delays. The tragic deaths of beloved cast members Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, in July 2023, and Eric Dane, known for his role as Cal Jacobs, in February 2026 after completing his work on the season, also necessitated significant script rewrites, adding to the complexities of bringing the new season to air.

This season introduces a five-year time jump, a creative decision that moves the characters beyond their high school years and into early adulthood, addressing previous concerns about the cast's ages relative to their roles. Rue Bennett's storyline finds her operating south of the border in Mexico, deeply entangled in a drug smuggling operation and working to pay off a substantial debt to Laurie, portrayed by Martha Kelly, all while secretly serving as an informant for the DEA.

Creator Sam Levinson previously offered insights into Rue's trajectory this season, stating, "We basically pick up Rue [Zendaya] south of the border in Mexico, in debt to Laurie [Martha Kelly], trying to come up with some very innovative ways to pay it off." This setup promises an even darker and more complex journey for the show's central character, testing her limits in unprecedented ways.

The challenges extend beyond Rue, as other key characters are also navigating their own turbulent paths. Cassie Howard, played by Sydney Sweeney, is reportedly engaged to Nate Jacobs, portrayed by Jacob Elordi. Cassie is pursuing fame as an erotic influencer, grappling with a fierce addiction to social media and envious of the lives her former high school classmates appear to be living. Levinson elaborated on their situation, noting, "And then Cassie [Sydney Sweeney] is living in the suburbs with Nate [Jacob Elordi]. They're engaged and she's very addicted to social media and envious of what appears to be the big lives that all of her high school classmates are living at this point in time." Meanwhile, Nate is reportedly contending with mounting debt and the complexities of managing his father Cal's business affairs.

HBO's Head of Drama, Francesca Orsi, expressed the network's excitement for the season's arrival despite the delays. Public statements indicated Orsi's enthusiasm, with her reportedly saying, "I am thrilled that we are ready to begin production on Euphoria in January. We could not be happier with our creative partnership with Sam [Levinson] and this incredible cast. We look forward to bringing this new season of Euphoria to life for the fans."

As the season draws to a close, the stakes for Rue and the entire ensemble are higher than ever. Tonight's penultimate episode is crucial in setting the stage for the dramatic conclusion, promising to unravel more layers of the intricate web of relationships, addictions, and criminal enterprises that define the show's universe. Fans are bracing for an intense ride as the characters hurtle towards the season finale, leaving many questions about their ultimate fates.
