Duffer Brothers Back "The Boroughs" For Netflix Mystery

1w ago

Netflix just dropped a new mystery series, "The Boroughs," and its creators are giving major props to the Duffer Brothers for making their ambitious vision come to life. The show, a science fiction drama, premiered on May 21, 2026, and is the brainchild of Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, with significant creative and production muscle from Matt and Ross Duffer's Upside Down Pictures.

This eight-part series was first ordered by Netflix in April 2023, with Addiss and Matthews announced as the showrunners. The Duffer Brothers, through their Los Angeles-based production company Upside Down Pictures, which they launched in 2022 under an overall deal with Netflix, took on executive producer roles. Hilary Leavitt, a producing partner at Upside Down Pictures, also serves as an executive producer, alongside Ben Taylor, who directed several episodes of the show.

"The Boroughs" transports viewers to a seemingly quiet retirement community nestled in the New Mexico desert. The story kicks off with Sam Cooper, a grieving newcomer portrayed by Alfred Molina, who quickly finds himself up against a monstrous threat. This unsettling encounter pushes him to team up with a crew of unlikely heroes, all on a mission to uncover a dark secret and stop an otherworldly entity from snatching the one thing they're already short on: time.

Creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews are no strangers to crafting intricate worlds. They previously served as creators and showrunners for "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" and contributed as writers to "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim." Will Matthews also has a background in acting, with notable roles on MTV's "Punk'd" and Logo's "Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World." The duo's collaboration dates back to 2009, during which they've sold numerous television pilots and feature films. They've described "The Boroughs" as a culmination of their childhood interests, with Addiss drawing monsters and Matthews planning for retirement, resulting in a show about retirees battling monsters that, according to them, "plays to both our strengths." Their goal was to create a series that teenagers, parents, and grandparents could all enjoy together.

Matt and Ross Duffer, the identical twin brothers, are globally recognized for their work on the smash-hit Netflix supernatural science fiction horror series "Stranger Things," which first hit screens in 2016. Their success with "Stranger Things" solidified their reputation for seamlessly blending science fiction, horror, and fantasy with relatable coming-of-age narratives. Before their Netflix mega-deal, they also wrote and directed the 2015 horror film "Hidden" and contributed as writers and producers to the Fox science fiction series "Wayward Pines" from 2015 to 2016. Their production company, Upside Down Pictures, was officially launched in July 2022 with the stated aim to "create the kind of stories that inspired the Duffers growing up - stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism."

Casting for "The Boroughs" unfolded in two significant phases throughout 2024. In September 2024, an impressive ensemble cast was announced, featuring seasoned talents like Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Clarke Peters, Geena Davis, and Bill Pullman. Later that same month, Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, and Alice Kremelberg joined the roster. The cast further expanded in November 2024 with the addition of Rafael Casal, Ed Begley Jr., Jane Kaczmarek, Eric Edelstein, Dee Wallace, and Mousa Hussein Kraish in recurring capacities. The collective experience of the cast, including veteran actors such as Molina, Davis, Woodard, and Pullman, has been praised, reportedly bringing "something like 350 years of craft to The Boroughs."

Reports indicate the Duffer Brothers were "elated" when Addiss and Matthews first pitched the concept for "The Boroughs." They had long wished for a film similar to Ron Howard's classic "Cocoon" and found "The Boroughs" to be exactly what they had been "dreaming of." The brothers emphasized their intention for the series to portray its characters as "real people facing real challenges… along with a few supernatural ones," rather than treating aging as a mere punchline.

Drawing parallels to their most famous work, the Duffer Brothers noted, "While the characters are a little older than the kids in Stranger Things — they ride golf carts instead of bikes — the spirit is very much the same." They characterized the show as, "at its core, this is a story about belonging and growing up — no matter your age — filled with adventure, wonder, comedy, scares, and tears." Addiss and Matthews reciprocated the praise, stating it was "so fun to work with the Duffer Brothers — the masters of balancing heart and horror."

This project carries particular weight as it marks one of the Duffer Brothers' final ventures with Netflix under their existing deal. In August 2025, Matt and Ross Duffer finalized a new four-year exclusive film and television deal with Paramount, which officially commenced in April 2026. This strategic move signals their primary focus shifting towards creating and directing large-scale theatrical films for Paramount, an ambition they reportedly couldn't fully pursue at Netflix.

Despite their move, the Duffer Brothers will maintain their involvement as executive producers on ongoing Netflix projects still in development, which includes "The Boroughs" and an untitled "Stranger Things" spin-off series. However, it has been reported that the "Stranger Things" intellectual property will remain entirely with Netflix. "The Boroughs" itself has been described as sharing "similar DNA with Stranger Things, as well as classic Spielberg and The Goonies," but with a unique twist of senior citizens at its core. The series delves into themes of grief, aging, and discovering purpose later in life, particularly through Alfred Molina's character, Sam Cooper, a recently widowed retired aeronautical engineer.

Addiss and Matthews have revealed a three-season plan for the series, though its continuation will ultimately depend on viewership numbers and the availability of its esteemed cast. With its blend of mystery, sci-fi, and heartfelt character work, "The Boroughs" aims to offer a fresh perspective on what it means to face extraordinary challenges at any stage of life.
