Five-Star Running Back David Gabriel Georges Nears College Decision

2d ago

One of the nation's most coveted high school football talents, five-star running back David Gabriel Georges, is on the cusp of making his college choice. The standout athlete is scheduled to reveal his commitment on July 22, 2026, with the college football world watching closely as Ohio State and Tennessee emerge as perceived frontrunners.

Georges, who hails from Quebec, Canada, currently showcases his exceptional skills at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He is widely recognized as a top-tier prospect in the 2027 recruiting class, holding the No. 10 overall ranking in the 247Sports Composite and standing as the No. 2 running back nationwide. His athletic profile is impressive, featuring a reported 4.38-second 40-yard dash, a feat that drew significant national attention in late April or early May 2026. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing between 205 and 220 pounds, Georges has consistently delivered on the field. He was named the 2025 MaxPreps National Player of the Year on January 6, 2026, following a junior season where he amassed 1,756 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns. As a sophomore in 2024, he recorded 1,103 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. While Ohio State and Tennessee appear to be leading the charge, Georges' final four also include Georgia and Ole Miss.

The intense recruitment battle for Georges truly began to heat up during Baylor School's state championship run. During this period, he reportedly "shredded through Brentwood Academy's defense," delivering "jaw-dropping plays" that secured a state title for Baylor and put him firmly on the radar of top college programs.

Ohio State's strong position in the recruitment is largely attributed to the long-standing relationship between Georges and Buckeyes running backs coach Carlos Locklyn. Reports indicate that Locklyn first made contact with Georges when he was in eighth grade, during Locklyn's tenure at Oregon. This connection has reportedly continued and strengthened through Locklyn's move to Ohio State, with the coach making multiple trips to Canada to visit Georges' family and hosting him on campus several times. Georges has spoken positively about Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, reportedly stating, "Coach (Ryan) Day is a really nice person. When I talk to him, he told me the players have to earn respect from everyone. He said to always practice with 100% effort, and I really liked that mentality. It's always great talking to him."

Tennessee, on the other hand, benefits from a significant "hometown advantage." With Georges playing high school football in Chattanooga, the Volunteers are geographically close, a factor that often plays a role in recruits' decisions. Reports also suggest that some of Georges' former high school teammates are already on Tennessee's roster, and it is believed that Georges, being originally from Canada, would appreciate having familiar faces with him in college. Tennessee's running backs coach De'Rail Sims has also been actively involved in his recruitment. The official visits leading up to his decision began with Ohio State on May 29, 2026. He is scheduled to visit Tennessee on June 5, 2026, followed by Ole Miss on June 12, 2026, and Georgia on June 19, 2026.

Recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong of Rivals has remained firm in his prediction for Ohio State, despite acknowledging Tennessee as a "legitimate challenger." Wiltfong reportedly cited the Buckeyes' history of developing running backs, program consistency, and "competitive NIL opportunities" as key factors. He was quoted saying, "I'm still riding with my prediction in favor of Ohio State for Chattanooga (Tenn.) Baylor School five-star running back David Gabriel Georges. With the way the Buckeyes have developed and showcased running backs, to the consistency of the program, to the competitive NIL opportunities, Ohio State checks the most boxes and is the best fit." There has been speculation regarding potential Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) offers, with one report suggesting Tennessee might offer "$500,000 to a million more than the Buckeyes."

Georges' high school coach, Erik Kimrey, has been effusive in his praise for the young phenom. Kimrey reportedly stated, "We're really proud of David. We feel like he deserves it because he's a special talent, and I've said that since the first time I saw him. I don't think he has any weaknesses. His God-given ability -- speed, power elusiveness -- he can do it all. He can run around you, through you or by you." A related storyline involved Ohio State's attempt to recruit Georges' Baylor School teammate, four-star quarterback Keegan Croucher, who is committed to Ole Miss. The Buckeyes reportedly hoped that having a familiar quarterback would make Ohio State a more attractive destination for Georges. However, Croucher publicly affirmed his commitment to Ole Miss, reportedly stating, "I'm pretty locked in with Ole Miss. It's definitely intriguing but I'm good where I'm at. Their whole thing was just, 'Think about it and let us know.' If something ever happens with Ole Miss, they'd be up there, but I'm locked in." This development was seen as a "small positive development" for Tennessee in the recruiting battle.

Scouting reports describe Georges as a "violent runner" who combines "high-end vision with supreme tackle-breaking ability." He is considered an "absolute load to tackle at the second level," possessing "elite contact balance and power." His potential as a "bellcow back" could make him the "centerpiece of an offense for a College Football Playoff contender." Landing a player of his caliber is widely considered a "class-shaping move" for any program, underscoring the high stakes of his impending decision.

Georges himself has indicated that academic strength and an offensive system that aligns with his physical running style are important factors in his choice, noting that both of his parents work in health fields. His decision will not only shape the future of his chosen collegiate program but also set the stage for what many anticipate will be a remarkable college football career.

As July 22, 2026, draws near, the anticipation for Georges' announcement continues to build. Whether he opts for the established power and consistent development of Ohio State or the familiar comfort and hometown connection of Tennessee, his decision is poised to send significant ripples through the recruiting circuit and profoundly impact his chosen program's trajectory for years to come.
