Ben Stiller to Lead New Apple TV+ Comedy 'Protective Custody'

1w ago

Ben Stiller is stepping back into a leading comedy role, but with a twist. The acclaimed actor and director, known recently for his work behind the camera on the hit drama "Severance," is set to star in a new Apple TV+ series titled "Protective Custody," portraying a disgraced financier accused of massive fraud.

The news broke on May 22, 2026, revealing Apple TV+'s continued push into the comedy genre with this high-profile project. "Protective Custody" will see Stiller take on the role of a man navigating the complexities of prison life, attempting to salvage his reputation and confront the repercussions of his alleged actions while awaiting trial. This marks Stiller's first time leading a scripted, non-sketch comedy series, a significant shift for an artist who has spent considerable time behind the camera in recent years.

The series is being developed through Apple Studios, with an eye towards a full series order, signaling Apple's commitment to the project. Comedy legend Mike Judge, celebrated for his iconic contributions to "King of the Hill" and "Office Space," is attached to direct and co-showrun. Judge will also co-write the series alongside Steve Hely and Dave King, a reunion for the trio who previously collaborated on the Peabody Award-winning animated series "Common Side Effects."

The concept for "Protective Custody" originated from producer Ben Silverman of Propagate Content. Silverman, who famously helped bring "The Office" to American television, pitched the show with a unique description: "Hogan's Heroes meets The Office." He will serve as an executive producer, joined by Howard Owens and Rodney Ferrell for Propagate Content, along with Michael Rotenberg and Oly Obst for 3 Arts Entertainment, and Oscar nominee Nanette Burstein. Stiller will also executive produce through his company, Red Hour, alongside John Lesher.

Stiller's relationship with Apple TV+ is already well-established. He is a primary director and executive producer for the critically acclaimed drama "Severance," which is currently gearing up for its third season. He even made an uncredited voice cameo in the first season of "Severance" as an animated version of Lumon founder Kier Eagan, a role he playfully addressed by stating, "I don't know if we've ever confirmed that I'm the voice of Kier Eagan; Lumon employee agreements are very airtight!"

Beyond his work on "Severance" and the upcoming "Protective Custody," Stiller is involved in other Apple TV+ ventures, including "The Dink," a pickleball comedy set for release in July 2026, where he both produces and stars. He is also set to star in and executive produce the limited series "The Off Weeks" alongside Jessica Chastain. His consistent involvement with the platform suggests that Apple TV+ is becoming a significant creative hub for the actor-director. Outside of Apple, Stiller is also expected to return to the "Meet the Parents" film series with "Focker-in-Law," slated for a November 2026 release.

This project highlights Apple TV+'s strategic efforts to expand its comedy offerings. The streamer has openly expressed its ambitions in the comedy space, aiming to replicate the critical and awards success it has found in prestige dramas, such as "Severance," within the comedic genre. Apple TV+ has already built a solid comedy lineup with popular shows like "Ted Lasso" and "Shrinking." The addition of a high-profile series like "Protective Custody," featuring a major talent like Stiller and a renowned comedic mind like Judge, is a clear move to attract top-tier talent and further cement its identity in the competitive streaming landscape.

Apple's overall streaming strategy has been characterized by a "prestige-first" approach, emphasizing high-end, auteur-driven projects. While this strategy has earned critical acclaim and numerous Emmy wins, reports indicate the service has trailed competitors in subscriber numbers and incurred annual losses exceeding $1 billion. However, Apple's substantial financial resources allow it to pursue a long-term strategy in Hollywood, taking creative risks that reinforce its brand image. There have been reports suggesting Apple is moderating its spending on new projects and exploring more economical distribution methods. Despite these adjustments, the commitment to high-quality original content remains evident with investments in projects like "Protective Custody." This series represents a continued effort to balance critical appeal with broader audience engagement, particularly within the comedy genre.

As Apple TV+ continues to carve out its niche, "Protective Custody" stands as a significant development, bringing together established talent for a fresh take on a familiar premise. The series will be one to watch as Stiller navigates a new comedic challenge and Apple TV+ further refines its comedy brand.
