Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Alex Isley has officially stepped into a new era with the release of her major label debut album, When the City Sleeps. The highly anticipated 15-track project, dropped on March 20, 2026, through Free Lunch Records, an imprint of Warner Records, offers listeners a deep dive into the artist's most intimate reflections.
Isley described the album as "a snapshot of her thoughts," with its title directly referencing "a specific point during the evening, and the stillness that comes when the day slows down." The collection explores themes of love, heartbreak, and personal transformation, channeling those often profound late-night emotions. It is a work she characterizes as "an album for the dreamers, and my most personal work yet," hinting at the vulnerability contained within.

When the City Sleeps boasts an impressive roster of collaborators, featuring acclaimed artists James Fauntleroy and Syd. Production credits are equally robust, with Kaytranada lending his talents to the track "Mic On." Other notable producers include Abrhm, Darhyl Camper, Jack Dine, D'Mile, Larrance Dopson, Freaky Rob, Gitty, Josh Grant, and Oh Gosh, with D'Mile specifically producing the single "Sweetest Lullabye." This single, which debuted on February 13, 2026, preceded the album's full release alongside "Westside," which arrived on March 13, 2026. The album also seamlessly incorporates six tracks from Isley's 2025 EP, When, creating a continuous narrative flow.
Born Alexandra Isley in New Jersey and raised in Los Angeles, Alex Isley carries a rich musical legacy as the daughter of Ernie Isley from the legendary R&B/funk group The Isley Brothers. Despite her esteemed lineage, she has meticulously carved out her own distinct lane, blending soul, R&B, and jazz. Her musical journey began early, performing at just six years old, and she received classical vocal training from her maternal grandmother, an opera singer, starting at age twelve. Her academic pursuits further solidified her foundation, as she later studied Ethnomusicology with a focus on Jazz Studies at UCLA.
Isley launched her career as an independent artist in 2012 with her self-produced debut EP, The Love/Art Memoirs. Over the years, she built a strong discography, including projects such as Dreams in Analog (2013), L U X U R Y (2015), The Beauty of Everything, Pt. 1 (2018), and The Beauty of Everything, Pt. 2 (2019). Her collaborative EP Wilton (2019) with producer Jack Dine further showcased her versatility and collaborative spirit.

The 2020 pandemic proved to be a period of significant growth for Isley. She participated in NPR Music's Tiny Desk (Home) Concert series and collaborated with Masego and Jack Dine on the single "Good & Plenty," which later saw a remix featuring Lucky Daye. Her vocal contributions graced Lucky Daye's Candydrip (2022) and PJ Morton's Watch The Sun (2022). A major career milestone arrived in October 2023 with her collaborative album with Terrace Martin, I Left My Heart in Ladera, which marked her first appearance on the Billboard charts, climbing to number two on the Contemporary Jazz Albums list and number 22 on Jazz Albums. Her talent was further recognized in 2024 with two Grammy Award nominations as a featured artist for "Back to Love" by Robert Glasper and SiR, for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance. Her signing with Free Lunch Agency/Warner Records in February 2025 solidified her transition to a major label, followed by an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Female Artist in 2026.
Isley revealed that When the City Sleeps "holds some of my most intrusive and vulnerable thoughts and feelings when it comes to life, and what my future holds when it comes to love." She elaborated on the track "Sweetest Lullabye," stating it is "about making the bitter a little more sweet, and the lining a little more silver. To make the goodbye a little less painful by savoring the sweetest moments." She added that given the album's deep and vulnerable nature, "I think 'Sweetest Lullabye' is right on theme and the perfect gateway to this new world."
The creation of this album was a profound experience for Isley. She described it as "a release. It's exhaling for me." Reflecting on the final stages, she recalled, "I remember putting out this particular album and like listening to the final masters of it. I was like, 'I'm really about to do this.' And this is again, it's just new territory for me." Her hopes for listeners are equally personal, wishing they "leave having experienced love and release and maybe some insight about themselves and their own heart and their own journey and love and life wherever they are."
Los Angeles, Isley's hometown, plays a significant role in the album's narrative, described by the artist as "very much a main character in my story, since this is where I have lived, loved, dreamed, been heartbroken, and healed." This connection informs the album's reflective and introspective tone, encompassing "a lot of reflection, a lot of self-questions and things, a lot of reaffirming myself and competence," all wrapped in a distinct "nocturnal vibe, a nighttime album." As a mother navigating a flourishing career, Isley continues to captivate audiences with her soulful melodies and a fully formed artistic vision, consistently encouraging others to "put your whole heart in it because it pays off."
Following the album's impactful release, Isley embarked on the "When the City Sleeps Tour," a 13-city North American journey that kicked off in Atlanta on May 26 and ran through June 2026. Complementing the album's arrival, the official music video for "Westside" was also unveiled, serving as a nostalgic visual tribute to her beloved hometown. This new chapter firmly establishes Alex Isley not just as a successor to a legendary name, but as a singular force in contemporary R&B, ready to share her deepest artistic truths with the world.
